Dr Anthony Barbieri

Senior Associate Chiropractor & Team Leader · Wellbeing Chiropractic Melbourne CBD & Pakenham

I’m Dr Anthony Barbieri, Senior Associate chiropractor and team leader at Wellbeing Chiropractic, consulting on Collins Street in Melbourne’s CBD and at our Pakenham clinic. A Bachelor of Biomedical Science at Monash came first, then the RMIT double degree in 2005, and I have practised ever since, the last 15 years doubling as chiropractor to Victorian NPL soccer clubs including Brunswick Juventus. Sideline work shows you the mechanism of an injury instead of a description of it, and that lens follows me into every consultation. Appointments run happily in English or Italian.

What I see most, from Collins Street to Pakenham

The hamstring that tightens every second match

An NPL winger keeps pulling up tight through the back of the leg, and stretching hasn’t fixed it. I assess the pelvis, lumbar spine and running load as well as the hamstring itself, because the leg is often doing extra work for a joint above it that isn’t moving well.

Princes Highway twice a day, training twice a week

A Pakenham patient drives to the city and back most days, then fits in midweek training and a Saturday game. By mid-season the lower back complains in the car before it complains anywhere else. That mix of long sitting and weekend load is a regular part of my Pakenham list.

Headaches that keep coming back to the neck

A patient books in for recurring headaches, with a stiff, guarded neck and posture that has drifted forward over the years. The first job is a careful cervical assessment to work out if the neck is contributing at all, because not every headache belongs in a chiropractic clinic, and I’ll say so when it doesn’t.

The two clinics give me different halves of the same picture. On Collins Street I see more necks and headaches, backs that have stiffened over a run of long weeks, and people who want to know exactly what’s going on before they commit to care. In Pakenham there’s more sport in the mix, along with the lower backs that come from long drives and physical work. My questions don’t change much between the two. What is the joint actually doing, what load is going through it, and what does this body need to be ready for next week? That’s the sports chiropractic mindset, and I apply it to every presentation, not only the ones that arrive in club colours.

From Monash labs to the NPL sideline

I did a Bachelor of Biomedical Science at Monash, finishing in 2000, because I wanted to understand how the body worked before deciding what to do about it when it didn’t. Chiropractic answered that. I completed the double degree in Clinical Science and Chiropractic Science at RMIT in 2005 and I’ve been in practice ever since. These days I’m a Senior Associate with Wellbeing Chiropractic, splitting my week between Collins Street in the city and our Pakenham clinic.

Soccer has run alongside the clinic work the whole way through. I’ve spent the last 15 years as chiropractor to Victorian NPL clubs, and I look after Brunswick Juventus Soccer Club. Sideline work teaches you things a treatment room can’t. You see the mechanism of an injury instead of hearing about it three days later, and you learn to make hard calls about who plays on and who doesn’t with a coach standing next to you.

Away from the table, I’m fluent in Italian and happy to run entire consultations in it. And if you want more background than a profile page allows, there’s an episode of the Wellbeing Chiropractic podcast where I talk through my twenty years in this job.

How I run a first visit

A first visit with me starts with a detailed history and a movement assessment. I’m primarily a Diversified practitioner, which means specific, hands-on adjusting, but adjusting is a decision, not a default, and it only gets made once I understand your presentation. For sporting patients that includes what your training week looks like, what position you play and when you next need to be on the park.

The other thing I hold myself to is explaining. You’ll hear what I found, what I think is driving it and what the care plan involves before we start, in plain terms. Ask anything along the way. If the assessment tells me chiropractic isn’t the right tool for your problem, I’ll say that too and help you get to the right practitioner.

“You shouldn’t leave an appointment with a question you didn’t get to ask.”

How I work in the treatment room

Diversified

The manual adjusting approach I use most. Specific, hands-on adjustments to joints that aren’t moving well, applied after assessment rather than as a routine.

Sports chiropractic

Assessment and management of sporting injuries with an eye on training load and return to play, shaped by 15 years working with Victorian NPL soccer clubs.

Questions patients ask

No. The same thinking applies to Sunday league, park cricket or a running habit. I look at how you move, what load is going through the sore area and what you’re training for, then build the care plan around that. What the NPL work I’ve seen a very wide range of sporting injuries at every stage, from fresh to badly ignored.

Some headache types have a neck component and some don’t. At your first visit I assess your neck, posture and history to work out which kind you have and whether chiropractic care is appropriate for it. If it isn’t, I’ll tell you plainly and point you towards your GP or the right practitioner instead.

Sì, certo. I’m fluent in Italian and happy to run the whole consultation in it, at either Melbourne CBD or Pakenham. Let reception know when booking so reception puts a note on your file.

Yes. Both clinics have HICAPS, so if your extras cover includes chiropractic you can claim on the spot with all major funds and only pay the gap. Bring your fund card to your appointment.

No. Chiropractors are primary healthcare practitioners in Australia. Book directly. If you do have imaging, old reports or a letter from your GP, bring them, they earn their place at the first assessment.
