Dr Noraini Zakaria

Amber & Flow Acupuncture·Acupuncturist and Chinese medicine practitioner

I’m Dr Noraini Zakaria, an AHPRA registered acupuncturist and Chinese medicine practitioner, and most people call me Nori. Amber & Flow Acupuncture is my own practice, and I consult from Wellbeing Chiropractic Melton on Mondays, not far from the home I have kept in Melton since 2003. I came to acupuncture after thirty years as a systems analyst and programmer, though the pull goes back to a childhood among traditional healers in Malaysia. Women’s health and chronic pain are my areas of special interest.

Who I see on Mondays

Women’s health

Women’s health became a natural focus because most of the people who come to me are women. It is also why I started a home-visit wellness service for new mothers after Covid, for the early weeks of feeding and new routines.

Long-standing pain

Chronic pain management is an area I have chosen to concentrate on. Chinese medicine looks at patterns across the whole person rather than one isolated complaint, and care is planned over time.

Internal medicine, the Chinese way

Internal medicine is the other area I concentrate on. In Chinese medicine that means reading patterns of Yin and Yang, hot and cold, and the movement of qi and blood, rather than chasing a single label.

Every consultation starts with the pattern, not the label. Chinese medicine works to harmonise Yin and Yang, hot and cold, and to move qi and blood, and the tools for that at Amber & Flow are acupuncture, electro-acupuncture, cupping, gua sha, meridian massage, reflexology, herbs and dietary advice. I also encourage clients to take up qigong or Tai Chi for breathing, calm and joint strength between visits. Chinese medicine sits alongside your GP’s care, not in place of it.

From a village midwife’s house to a Melton clinic

I was welcomed into the world at home by my great-aunt, the village midwife, a practitioner recognised by Malaysia’s Rural Health department, and I watched some of my siblings arrive the same way. My great-uncle was a well-known masseur. Growing up among traditional healers planted an interest that waited a long time for its turn.

First came a Bachelor of Computer Science and more than thirty years as a systems analyst and programmer. I studied overseas from the age of seventeen, returned to Malaysia, then migrated to Australia with my whole family and have lived in Melton since 2003. In time I went back to study, completing a Graduate Diploma in Professional Development and a Bachelor of Health Science in Acupuncture, and I have practised acupuncture and Chinese medicine since 2018. My father taught Bahasa Malaysia at a Chinese vernacular school, so I grew up in a very multicultural community, and I love that Melbourne feels like the same kind of melting pot.

I have many children and four grandchildren. I have taken part in fun runs and parkrun since 2010, though Saturdays are now working days, so if you want to find me outside the clinic, join Tai Chi at Arnolds Creek on a Tuesday night.

Warm, unhurried & pattern-based

A first appointment is mostly listening. I want to know how you sleep, eat, move and cope, because in Chinese medicine those threads are read together as a pattern, and the pattern decides the treatment rather than a single named condition.

From there we might use acupuncture or electro-acupuncture, cupping, gua sha or meridian massage, and I may suggest herbs, dietary changes according to Chinese medicine principles, or a qigong or Tai Chi habit to keep between visits. Clients describe me as warm and earthy, and I take that as a compliment.

“Traditional medicine has survived for thousands of years, and Traditional Chinese Medicine is very relevant now.”

Questions clients ask

I am an AHPRA registered Chinese medicine practitioner, not a medical doctor. The title reflects my registration in Chinese medicine, which is why you will always see it paired with acupuncturist on this page.

Yes, if your extras cover includes acupuncture. Private health rebates are the one rebate type that applies at Amber & Flow. Medicare and NDIS are not available for my services.

Yes. I started a mobile wellness service for new mothers after Covid, when I saw how many were finding the early weeks of feeding and new routines hard, and it continues today.

Chinese medicine looks at how your symptoms sit together, alongside sleep, digestion, energy and stress, and names that pattern. Treatment then works to rebalance the pattern, which is why two people with the same diagnosis may receive different care.

Yes. I consult in English and Bahasa Malaysia.
