Dr Shiyuan(Amanda) Hu

Chiropractor · Wellbeing Chiropractic Epping & Moorabbin Chiropractic Centre

I’m Dr Shiyuan Hu, though patients know me as Amanda, chiropractor across our Epping and Moorabbin clinics, consulting in Mandarin or English. I finished RMIT’s double degree in health science and chiropractic in 2020, and the habit that stuck from training was the plainest one: work out why a problem is happening before deciding what to do about it. Every consultation still runs through that question, answered with hands-on and low-force adjusting plus rehab exercises you can carry on at home. Describing pain accurately is hard enough in your first language, so having two available changes more than people expect.

The right adjustment depends on the person in front of me

The warehouse shift off Cooper Street

Repetitive lifting through a long picking shift in Epping’s industrial estate, and a low back that tightens a little earlier each day. Stretching at lunch buys an hour, then the stiffness is back.

Wary of the crack

Plenty of people want chiropractic care but feel uneasy about manual adjusting, often older patients or anyone trying it for the first time. A low-force instrument technique can do the work without the noise.

The Nepean Highway commute

A day on your feet, then a slow run down the Nepean Highway to get home. By Moorabbin the hips have set, and climbing out of the car takes a beat longer than it used to.

Three different presentations, and I’d treat each one differently. Before anything gets adjusted I want to know what’s driving the problem, what your normal week asks of your body, and which style of care you’re comfortable with. Sometimes that means hands-on Diversified adjusting, other times the gentler Activator instrument. Nearly always there are exercises attached, because what happens between appointments shapes recovery as much as the appointments themselves.

From RMIT to two ends of Melbourne

I finished my double degree at RMIT in 2020, a Bachelor of Health Science alongside a Bachelor of Applied Science in Chiropractic. The technique training was thorough, but the habit that stuck was simpler: work out why a problem is happening before deciding what to do about it. I still run every consultation through that question.

These days I split my week between our Epping and Moorabbin clinics, two suburbs at opposite ends of Melbourne with surprisingly similar spines. I consult in Mandarin as well as English, which matters more than people expect. Describing pain accurately is hard enough in your first language. When a patient can explain exactly where it catches and what makes it worse without hunting for words, the assessment gets sharper and the care plan gets better.

I’m a member of Chiropractic Australia and a registered NDIS provider for chiropractic supports. Beyond the formal bits, my aim is fairly simple. I want you to leave each visit understanding a little more about your own body than when you walked in, because patients who understand their condition tend to take better care of it.

Assessment first, then everything else

A first appointment with me starts with a thorough history and a movement assessment, because the site of pain and the source of pain are often two different places. Once I understand what’s driving your presentation, we talk it through in plain terms and agree on a plan together.

Treatment usually combines adjusting, either Diversified or the low-force Activator instrument depending on what suits you, with rehab exercises to restore movement and build longer-term function. I’ll never hand you a mystery. You’ll know what we’re doing and what your part in the recovery is.

“I want to help you understand your body, so you can take an active part in your own recovery.”

How I work in the treatment room

Diversified

The manual adjusting people associate with chiropractic care. Precise, hands-on and used where a specific joint isn’t moving the way it should.

Activator Method

A hand-held instrument that delivers a gentle, targeted impulse. A good option if you prefer low-force care or manual adjusting doesn’t suit you.

Rehab exercises

Simple, specific exercises matched to your assessment, so the improvements from each visit keep building at home.

Questions patients ask

Yes. I consult in Mandarin and English, and you’re welcome to switch between the two mid-sentence. If it’s easier to describe your pain in Mandarin, do that. Accurate detail helps me far more than polished English.

That’s a common preference and it’s easy to work around. Alongside Diversified adjusting I use the Activator Method, a hand-held instrument that delivers a gentle, low-force impulse with no twisting and no cracking sound. Tell me at your first visit and we’ll plan your care around it.

Yes. I’m a registered NDIS provider for chiropractic supports and see participants at both Epping and Moorabbin. Call the clinic before your first appointment and the team will help you sort out the paperwork side.

Yes, provided your extras cover includes chiropractic. Both Epping and Moorabbin have HICAPS terminals, so claims with all major funds go through on the spot and the gap is all you pay.

No. You can book straight in at either clinic, chiropractors are first-contact practitioners. If you have recent scans, reports or a GP letter, bring them. Useful, not required.
