Dr HUEY CHEN TAN

Chiropractor · Wellbeing Chiropractic Lilydale

I’m Dr Huey Chen Tan, chiropractor at our Lilydale clinic. My chiropractic double degree at RMIT came with a place on the Vice-Chancellor’s List for academic excellence, and my consult room comes with five languages: English, Mandarin, Cantonese, Malay and Hokkien. Between those two facts sits my actual job, patient-centred, evidence-informed care built around your goals and explained until it is genuinely yours. Diversified and Thompson drop-piece adjusting, the Activator instrument and Sacro-Occipital Technique give the care four distinct tools, so treatment is fitted rather than defaulted, and Chiropractic Australia membership keeps the standard current.

Lilydale’s daily wear & tear

The Maroondah crawl

Lilydale sits at the end of the train line and the start of the highway queue. Long seated commutes stack onto desk days, and lower backs tally the total.

Yarra Valley weekends

Hikes, horse paddocks, garden beds and cellar-door strolls, the valley invites big weekends. Monday sometimes disagrees with them.

Checkout shoulders

Retail and hospitality keep Lilydale moving, and repetitive reaching, scanning and carrying keep shoulders and necks grumbling. Assessment finds which movements are billing you.

Patient-centred is an easy phrase and a demanding practice. It means your unique needs and goals get understood before anything else happens, the examination is thorough, and the explanation lands in whichever of my five languages makes it clearest. Care is evidence-informed and personalised, aimed at lasting health rather than a rotating door, and anything that needs a GP’s involvement first is named at the first sit-down.

Five languages, one standard of care

I developed my clinical skills through years of training at RMIT, where I finished the chiropractic double degree and was recognised on the Vice-Chancellor’s List for Academic Excellence along the way. I’m proud of that recognition because of what it stands for at the treatment table: rigour, and the refusal to coast.

My technique range spans Diversified and Thompson drop-piece adjusting, the Activator instrument, and Sacro-Occipital Technique, four distinct tools, which means your care is fitted rather than defaulted. I practise at Lilydale as a member of Chiropractic Australia.

And then there are the languages. English, Mandarin, Cantonese, Malay and Hokkien all work in my room, which matters enormously in the outer east’s Chinese and Malaysian communities. Explaining a spine in someone’s first language changes the whole appointment, and often the whole recovery.

Evidence-informed, personally fitted

First visits centre on you: goals first, history next, then a structured physical examination. Findings get explained clearly, with the evidence behind them, in the language that serves you best, and the care plan is built to your life rather than a template.

Treatment draws from four techniques, calibrated to comfort and presentation, and the plan includes what happens between visits: movement, habits and the small daily corrections that make improvement stick. The goal is written into the plan, lasting health and better quality of life, and progress is measured against it.

“A diagnosis shouldn’t need translating at the dinner table. I explain it properly the first time, in your language.”

How I work in the treatment room

Diversified adjusting

Specific manual adjusting, applied only where the assessment makes the case.

Activator Method

Instrument-based care for spines that prefer the gentlest measurable input.

Thompson drop-piece

A drop-away table section that shares the adjustment’s work, easing what your joints feel.

Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT)

Wedge-block positioning that lets your own body weight do the correcting.

Questions patients ask

English, Mandarin, Cantonese, Malay and Hokkien, fluently and in any mix. Bring a parent or grandparent who prefers their own language, and the appointment runs in it, start to finish.

RMIT’s recognition for outstanding academic achievement across a degree. I carry it as a promise more than a trophy: the same standard that earned it goes into every assessment here.

The examination decides, then your comfort refines it. Four options, Diversified, Thompson, Activator and SOT, cover everything from classic manual adjusting to barely-felt block work, so the care fits you rather than the reverse.

Yes, all the major funds process at the Lilydale desk in the moment, with the gap as the one remaining cost where your cover applies.

Yourself, comfortable clothes, and any imaging or referral letters you already hold. Everything else, including the questions you’re worried are silly, gets handled in the room.
