This depends on how acute the injury is or the reason for getting a massage. For a recent injury it may be most practical to receive multiple massages within the space of a week to allow for inflammation to go down and promote healing. If therapeutic massage is intertwined with relaxing massage then multiple day in a row may be applicable. Speak to a massage therapist and see what they say, each patient should be treated on a case-by-case basis.

Food containing Vitamin C and Vitamin E are known to promote muscle growth and healing, which is exactly what is required post-massage. These are known as antioxidants which reduce cell damage and promote the reduction in oxidising agents in our blood.

Make sure that you have had enough water, although not too much as feeling very full during a deep tissue massage may cause issues due to the potential discomfort. The same applies for meals as a full stomach may not sit well with the process of deep tissue massage. It is also helpful to have a shower beforehand to relax the muscles and promote blood flow and allow for the most effective treatment. Lastly and most importantly, arrive in comfortable and loose clothing so as to give access to multiple regions of the body and also be easily removed if draping is required.

It is not recommended to perform exercise or physical activity after a massage due to the slow-release and healing nature of the activity. It is best to rest and allow your body to fully heal, especially after deep tissue massage as one may be feeling soreness or discomfort for some time afterwards. Of course you may go about your day as usual but the avoidance of intense physical activity is always promoted after massage.
