What Is the Difference Between a Chiropractor and a Physiotherapist?

At Wellbeing Chiropractic, one of the most common questions we hear from patients is:

“What’s the difference between a chiropractor and a physiotherapist?”

It is a great question, especially if you have never seen either before and are trying to decide which type of care might suit your needs.

Rather than trying to define exactly what every physiotherapist does, we think it is often easier to explain when I might see a physiotherapist, when I might see a chiropractor, and how people sometimes choose between them.

Why Someone Might See a Chiropractor

Chiropractors are trained to assess, diagnose and manage a range of musculoskeletal conditions, particularly those related to the spine, joints and nervous system. In our clinics, people often come to see us for things like

  • Back pain or stiffness
  • Neck discomfort
  • Headaches related to the neck or posture
  • Sciatica or nerve related symptoms
  • Postural concerns

The way chiropractic care is provided can vary, but at Wellbeing Chiropractic it may include gentle adjustments, mobilisation, advice about posture and ergonomics, and exercises to support your recovery. Some people choose chiropractic care because they are looking for a hands-on approach to improving joint movement and function.

When I Might See a Physiotherapist

If I had an ankle sprain, I might see a physiotherapist to work on reducing swelling, regaining ankle strength and improving stability.

If I had tennis elbow, I might see a physiotherapist for exercises and strategies to help reduce irritation, improve grip strength and get back to normal function.

Many physiotherapists use exercise based rehabilitation, manual therapy and other techniques to help people recover from injury or improve mobility. Some people prefer to see a physiotherapist if they are already working with a sports team, have a post operative care plan, or are in a rehabilitation program that is exercise focused.

How People Decide Between the Two

It is not unusual for people to see both a chiropractor and a physiotherapist at different times, depending on their needs. For example

  • A person might see a chiropractor for ongoing spinal care and posture support
  • That same person might see a physiotherapist after an ankle injury or for tennis elbow

It is really about matching the approach to your current goals, symptoms and preferences.

Can They Work Together?

Yes. Sometimes people choose to include both chiropractic care and physiotherapy as part of their overall healthcare. This might mean working on spinal alignment and nerve function with a chiropractor while also building strength and stability with a physiotherapist.

At Wellbeing Chiropractic, we often communicate with other health professionals including physiotherapists to help ensure care is coordinated and in the patient’s best interest.

Which One Is Right for You?

There is no single answer that works for everyone. The best option for you depends on

  • Your specific condition or concern
  • What type of care you feel most comfortable with
  • Your goals for movement, function and recovery

If you are unsure, starting with an initial consultation can help you understand what is going on and whether chiropractic care or another type of care might be best suited to your situation.

Final Thoughts

Whether you choose to see a chiropractor, a physiotherapist or both, the goal is the same, to help you move better, feel more comfortable and get back to doing the things you enjoy.

If you are considering chiropractic care, our team at Wellbeing Chiropractic is here to listen, assess and help guide you through your options.
