Massage Frequently Asked Questions For Our Point Cook Remedial Massage Therapists (FAQs)

FAQs

  • Can I get a massage 2 days in a row?
This depends on how acute the injury is or the reason for getting a massage. For a recent injury it may be most practical to receive multiple massages within the space of a week to allow for inflammation to go down and promote healing. If therapeutic massage is intertwined with relaxing massage then multiple day in a row may be applicable. Speak to a massage therapist and see what they say, each patient should be treated on a case-by-case basis.
  • What should I eat after a deep tissue massage?
Food containing Vitamin C and Vitamin E are known to promote muscle growth and healing, which is exactly what is required post-massage. These are known as antioxidants which reduce cell damage and promote the reduction in oxidising agents in our blood.
  • What can I expect from a deep tissue massage?
The main things to expect from a deep tissue massage are; initial discomfort, to realise the importance of deep and controlled breathing, post-massage soreness and sometimes bruising, a sense of relief or satisfaction, warmth in the area that has been treated, most importantly the therapeutic relaxation and treatment of a tight muscle that has caused you to book the appointment in the first place.
  • What should I do before a deep tissue massage?
Make sure that you have had enough water, although not too much as feeling very full during a deep tissue massage may cause issues due to the potential discomfort. The same applies for meals as a full stomach may not sit well with the process of deep tissue massage. It is also helpful to have a shower beforehand to relax the muscles and promote blood flow and allow for the most effective treatment. Lastly and most importantly, arrive in comfortable and loose clothing so as to give access to multiple regions of the body and also be easily removed if draping is required.
  • What should you not do after a massage?
It is not recommended to perform exercise or physical activity after a massage due to the slow-release and healing nature of the activity. It is best to rest and allow your body to fully heal, especially after deep tissue massage as one may be feeling soreness or discomfort for some time afterwards. Of course you may go about your day as usual but the avoidance of intense physical activity is always promoted after massage.
  • How much should you tip for a massage?
There is no current standard for tipping and no guidelines to this process. You tip what you feel is justified and what you feel the massage therapist deserves. Tipping isn’t a popular concept in Australia but that doesn’t mean you can’t.
  • What should you avoid after a massage?
Avoid any kind of diuretic actions such as drinking coffee or alcohol and exercising excessively. This causes dehydration and may elongate the healing process of the muscles you have just treated.
  • Is it OK to drink alcohol after a deep tissue massage?
It is definitely NOT recommended to drink alcohol after a massage due to the diuretic qualities of alcohol. Drink water, stay hydrated, eat a meal and take care of your healing body.
  • How do I get the most out of my massage?
Expect that you may feel discomfort and that this is part of the therapeutic process. Allow sufficient time for the massage to occur, and prepare your body with fluids and even a shower beforehand if possible. Concentrate strictly on deep and slow breathing and be open to the recommendations and treatment methods of the practitioner.
  • What can I expect from a full body massage?
A full body massage is exactly what it sounds like; the gliding and massaging of all the major muscle groups in your body. From your feet all the way to your head. There are no restrictions on the muscles that people may require massage on and massage therapists are qualified to treat all muscle groups in the body that are accessible. Expect mild discomfort initially, but also expect a relaxing and pleasant experience that may just make your week.
