Can Chiropractors Fix Posture?

Posture matters far beyond aesthetics. How you hold your spine, head and shoulders influences nervous system input, muscle durability, joint loading and long-term spinal health. So, can chiropractors really fix posture?

Research suggests, yes, they can play a meaningful role, especially when structural alignment is addressed alongside traditional care.

What the Research Says

A landmark study examined the effect of adding a cervical extension traction device (the Denneroll) on top of standard chiropractic-rehab care. Over just 10 weeks, patients who used the Denneroll in a supervised protocol showed an average improvement of about 13° in cervical lordosis (neck curve)[1].

Importantly, in some of the research reviews it is highlighted that the subjects did not have significant degeneration or advanced structural damage prior to the intervention[2]. While many of the studies focus on symptomatic populations (neck pain, radiculopathy), the principle still carries: improving the spinal curve and head-posture alignment may be foundational to better posture and may even help prevent downstream degeneration.

Why Does Posture Correction Matter?

When the cervical spine loses its normal lordotic curve (or shifts into forward head posture), biomechanical stresses change significantly. Ligaments, muscles and vertebrae are loaded in non-optimal ways which may accelerate degenerative change, impair nerve function or contribute to chronic discomfort[2].

Therefore, a structural posture correction approach (not just “sit tall” advice) makes sense: if you can restore the curve, you reduce abnormal tissue stress and improve function.

How Chiropractors Work With Posture (Including Devices Like Denneroll)

Chiropractors who apply a posture-corrective strategy often combine multiple components:

  • Spinal adjustments/manipulation: to restore joint motion, relieve fixation and support alignment
  • Extension traction or orthotic devices (e.g., Denneroll): used to remodel the spinal curve by applying sustained stretch/load to the cervical spine
  • Myofascial work & stretching: addressing tight musculature that holds poor posture
  • Rehab exercises & ergonomic changes: empowering patients to maintain improved posture
  • Postural assessment & monitoring: using x-rays or posture analysis to track curve changes

So yes, chiropractors may help fix posture, but it is most effective when structural correction (curve restoration) is included, rather than only pain-relief treatments.

Addressing AHPRA Compliance

In Australia, for a chiropractic clinic to remain AHPRA-compliant when discussing posture correction, it’s important to ensure:

  • Claims are realistic (not guaranteed for every individual)
  • You reference credible research (like the Denneroll study)
  • You clarify that posture correction is part of a broader care plan, not a stand-alone “cure all”
  • You discuss posture alongside functional and lifestyle factors not in isolation

By doing so you maintain professional transparency and meet regulatory expectations.

So, Can Chiropractors Fix Posture?

In short: Yes they may help. The evidence shows meaningful structural improvements (e.g., 13° average lordosis increase in a 10-week protocol) when posture correction is explicitly addressed in the care plan. That said, outcomes vary depending on the individual’s baseline, absence of degeneration, consistency of care, and how thoroughly the rehab and structural plan is followed.

If you’re concerned about your posture, especially if you have forward head posture, rounded shoulders or neck/upper-back tension, having a professional posture assessment, including spinal curve analysis, is a smart first step.
